Annual Community Outreach Events

Physics Phun Nite

This annual event takes place in November. It's a free event for the public where Physics Department members (faculty, staff, students, and friends of the department) present various physics experiments and demonstrations "without the lecture." Due to popular demand, this event was recently expanded to two nights. Physics Phun Nite is sponsored by the UA Physics Department and is the department's most popular event (see local news coverage for more.) Activities are free and can only be described as a showcase of the most fascinating physical principles. Past years have featured such diverse demonstrations as the Van de Graaff, a bed of nails, optical illusions, singing/dueling sewer pipes, burning bubles, giant smoke rings, light sabers, rocket propulsion, and so much more!

Daughters On Campus Day

This event is University-wide and occurs each April. Our most recent DCD production, "The Physics of Space: 2001 A Space Odyssey," continued the department's tradition of popular movie themes for the annual Daughters on Campus Day. Daughters of UA employees and students enjoyed an hour-long presentation of demonstrations relating to the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey." Physics Department members, dressed as astronauts, invited the audience to learn and discover many aspects of the physics of space. Past DCD themes have been: "ThePhysics of A Bug's Life and Beyond," "The Physics of Flubber," and "The Physics of Star Wars: the Movie."

Science Day

The Physics Department teams up with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers to present this event, which introduce about 40 elementary school students to the wonders of physics with a number of interactive demonstrations.

Southern Arizona Regional Science Fair

The Physics Department sets up a table at this event and pamphlets and posters are handed out.

SMART - Girl Scout Conference (Science, Math, And Related Technologies)

The Sahuaro Girl Scout Council organizes this special program to teach girls about the fun of doing science. The Physics Department presents an all day session of fun physics experiments for the kids to do. The year 1998 marked the first time we participated in this annual event.
