2000
State of the Department Address This has been a year of sweeping changes for the College of Science and the University. At the College level, it was a blow when Gene Levy accepted the Provost position at Rice, though of course we were very happy for him. But his loss was a significant one for our department and the College. Still, this University is nothing if not resilient, and we were indeed very fortunate that Joaquin Ruiz was willing to take on the burdens of the Deanship, and we were even luckier that the University had the good sense to seize the wonderful opportunity that this presented. Joaquin has started his Deanship in an absolutely outstanding way, and has already demonstrated on numerous occasions his strong commitment to continuing the task of building a top-flight Physics Department. Joaquin - we're glad to have you on board. And of course, Paul Sypherd stepped down as Provost after many years of dedicated and excellent service in a very difficult job. To many faculty, staff, and students, the Provost is less visible than the Dean - but I can assure you that without the right person in the Provost's job, the best Dean in the world won't be able to do very much. Paul did more for the Physics Department than I think many people realize, and I just want to publicly recognize that here. Again, we're very lucky that his successor is George Davis, who has also shown a very keen interest in our department, and a commitment to work for our continued progress. The upshot is - we really lucked out this past year. |
