Important Resources: (in chronological order.)

  • Pre-summer participant data collection template.

  • 2 weeks before program begins, email your resume draft to BOTH program mentors (Joe and Matt). Suggested revisions are emailed back to you (soon). Then email your revised resume promptly for distribution to faculty (before the program begins). Your resume should highlight your academic status, work experience (could be research or non-research related), any awards or honors you have received, computer skills and other skills. Add machine shop training to resume with the following text (rewrite to your taste):
Machine Shop Skill and Safety Course taught by Professor William Bickel, University of Arizona Physics in summer of (year). Familiar with and checked out on: shop safety and maintenance, lathe operation, mill operation, drill press & tapping, band saw, grinder, belt sander. Documentation available upon request.
Other skills covered during pre-research training camp that you should add to your resume include: MatLab programming, C programming, using Linux, oscilloscope use, and introductory digital electronics.

  • Click for map to PAS

  • Free Parking (at your own risk)

  • The 2-week Research Training Camp schedule (pdf).

  • Mandatory safety/chemical training (requires NetID). Please complete before you begin research.

  • Print and sign the photo release form.

  • CatCards may be obtained in the north area of the student union (the CatCard office). If your status this summer is DSV (Department Sponsored Visitor), then you must fill out the CatCard form using your DSV ID beginning with the letter 'A' (so your DSV ID will be nine digits whereas the form only lists eight spaces).

  • Security guidelines to protect your lab's research.

  • Explain your research preferences for lab selection.

  • Give an informal PowerPoint presentation at the end of the 2nd week. Prepare an 8-10 minute talk on any topic you would like: hobbies, interests, etc. You only get 10 minutes (+2 for questions) just like at science conferences. This is simply for you to practice presenting in a friendly environment (no professors allowed!).

  • Application for a summer parking permit. Pro-rated garage is ~$110, South-of-Sixth is ~$70.

  • Guidelines for writing your research paper drafts, making your various research presentations, and what your final web page must include.

  • Presentation Comment Card.

Social Activities:

  • We eat lunch together every day during Pre-Research Training Camp (the first two weeks), 12:00-1:00 (Student Union). Previous participants are always welcome.

  • "REU Reunion Cookout" on 2nd Wednesday of the program. Meet with previous REU participants to discuss lab selections and get input/advice (PAS west lawn).

  • "Tuesday Lunch Bunch" meets every Tuesday 11:30-12:30 (Student Union). Previous participants are always welcome.

  • "Thursday Mixer" meets every Thursday 4:00-5:30 (various announced locations). Previous participants are always welcome.

  • "REU Public Outreach" poster presentations to hundreds of local citizens at the 2nd Saturday monthly festival in downtown Tucson.

  • "Big Finale" presentations to faculty, family and other students on Thursday of the last week (PAS 218). (You have the last Friday to meet with your advisor to get feedback & advice and also to discuss future opportunities that you might explore: "exit interview".) Previous participants are always welcome.
