April 30, 2015 : PRL accepted our manuscript on "Generation and Detection of Spin Currents in Semiconductor Nanostructures with Strong Spin-Orbit Interaction" ! Congratulations to the Fabrizio and the experimental team for checking out our theory and implementing the spin detection scheme Peter Stano and I proposed in this manuscript.


February 18, 2015 : Teaching my first class at EPFL - solid state physics. Thrilled !

June 23 2014 : After one year minus 2 days of fight with various (and variously competent) referees and divisional associate editors, our manuscript on the local temperature of out-of-equilibrium quantum systems has finally been accepted for publication in Physical Review B. Very proud of this paper - no one ever managed to consistently define a temperature for out-of-equilibrium systems without assuming local, piecewise equilibrium. Now it's done. Less proud of Physical Review, however.

May 9 2014 : The Swiss National Science Foundation has awarded me an AP Energy Grant, effectively endorsing my change of career. CHF 1.2 mio over four years will turbo-start my new research program in energy and energy-related problems. Thanks a lot for this very warm "welcome back".


Apr 28 2014 : Our manuscript on trilayer graphene has been published in Nature Materials as an advanced online publication. See also this UANews article.


Mar 27 2014 : Our manuscript on trilayer graphene has been accepted for publication in Nature Materials. Nice work, where we demonstrate how the crystal structure of trilayer graphene can be controlled by external electric fields.


Dec 11 2013 : Manuscript on persistent currents with Majorana fermions accepted for publication in Physical Review B as a rapid communication. Bittersweet feeling, as I lost my collaborator, Markus Buettiker between submission and publication.

Aug 2 2013 : Jonathan has successfully defended his thesis. Four publications and a fifth one in the pipeline. Well done!

Jun 27 : After almost one year of hard fight against reviewers, our article on transmission phases [ arXiv:1212.2114 ] has finally been accepted for publication in Physical Review B. [Phys. Rev. B 88, 045419 (2013)]



Jun 26 : Our answers to two of the most important questions facing mankind :

-Can one define the local temperature of a system brought out-of-equilibrium ? Yes, it looks like one can.

-Are there other traces of the presence of Majorana fermions in condensed matter than in tunneling conductance and in the Josephson effect ? Yes, try persistent currents!

Dec 2 2012: Our manuscript on Anderson localization in multi-mode random lasers has just appeared as an advanced online publication in Nature Photonics. I am quite proud of this manuscript - we manage to produce analytical predictions for a highly nonlinear, disordered problem, not a trivial task. Congratulations to Peter for this very nice piece of work !

August 24 2011: We showed how shot-noise of electric currents can reveal the presence of spin accumulations. Congratulations to Jonathan on his first published manuscript, in Physical Review B.


May 20 2011: Congratulations to Peter ! His work on spin current measurement with quantum point contacts has been published in Physical Review Letters. It also received coverage in UANews.


February 13 2011: We showed that graphene deposited on hexagonal Boron Nitride is about as close to pure, isolated graphene as it can be. This work appeared online in Nature Materials today. Read an article about it in UANews.
