"Mathematical Methods for Physicists", by Arfken and Weber (Sixth Edition)
We will cover most but not all of Chapters 1-2 and 5-12, as time permits.
Attendance will not be recorded, but is recommended.
There will be 2 mid-term exams and a final exam. All exams will be take-home. They will be due 1 week after distribution. In general, there will be no make-up exams. Exceptional circumstances may be considered on an individual basis. Tentative dates for the exams are available at http://www.physics.arizona.edu/~thews/phys475/475exam.html
Homework assignments are taken from problems in the textbook. There will be approximately 10 homework sets during the semester. A list of assigned problems and due dates will be available on the web at http://www.physics.arizona.edu/~thews/phys475/phys475homework.html This material will be updated throughout the semester. It will also contain those problems required for Phys575 credit which are not in the text. One or more problems in each set will be graded and provide the basis for the homework component of your grade.
If you anticipate the need for reasonable accommodations to meet the requirements of this course, you must register with the Disability Resource Center and request that the DRC send me official notification of your accommodation needs as soon as possible. Please plan to meet with me by appointment or during office hours to discuss accommodations and how my course requirements and activities may impact your ability to fully participate.
The grading scale will be on a curve. An indication of numerical ranges for each letter grade will be given for each mid-term exam separately. The weight of each component of your final grade is:
|

15% |
|
Two Mid-Term Exams |
50% |
