Work Done on
Project: I am working with another undergrad student on a
project that will study natural convection heat transfer on a discrete
heat source. We are using a project originated by a graduate student in
1998. The apparatus has been cleaned and assembled by Stephanie, (the
other under grad) and she will be testing one of the boards created by
the originator of the project. I will be designing a board to be tested
in the cold plate apparatus as well. My board will be made of an
insulating material called Renshape that will be about 1 inch think. At
the center of the board will be the 1" X 1" heater. The board
will have approximately 31 thermo couples attached to it. This week I
am taking measurements and creating the basic design for the board. I
am going to try to design it in Auto Cad for the experience.
Projected Future Difficulties
: I am going to
attempt to design my board on Auto Cad, but I am not that familiar with
the program so it may not actually get done that way. I also will be
machining the material myself. I am welcomed into the AME machine shop
(thanks to Dr. Bickle) so I am pretty sure that I can handle it, but
this will be my first machining project. I am really mainly concerned
that my measurements are accurate.
New science Learned: I have learned quite a bit about the
different kinds of heat transfer. Also the relationship between
materials abilities to conduct heat and electricity. I am working with
a really cool material called Renshape. It's very woodlike and an
excellent insulator, also it is very easy to machine.
New Contacts Gained: I am working with several under
graduate student currently. Although we meet with the graduate students
and Dr. Ortega on Mondays, I haven't have a lot of experience working
with them yet. So here are some of my favorite people this week:
This is Seth Pleskach. Seth is
junior mechanical engineering major who had been working in Dr.
Ortega's lab for a couple of semesters now. Seth knows everything!
where is it? how do I get it? who do I see? ask Seth!
This is Stephanie Rodriguez.
Stephanie is also a junior majoring in mechanical engineering.
Stephanie was awarded the NASA Space Grant last year and has been
working in Dr. Ortega's lab ever since. She's my hero.
This is Bryan Hassell. Bryan is a
junior/senior mechanical engineering major. Not only is Bryan extremely
helpful, but he's always smiling. Really! I defy anyone to see him not
smiling.
I've met several graduate students and a couple other undergrads
briefly, one of the under grads that I met the other day was Ben. Ben
was an REU student last summer and got back on with Dr. Ortega this
summer.
Not shown are two of my favorite contacts so far. They are Jim and
Dimitri in the machine shop. They are the best, I don't know if they
would let me take thier picture though.
Oh and you know this guy:
